Orkestra-RumpilezzOrkestra Rumpilezz is a bracing 20-piece big band from Bahia, Brazil. The band combines the percussive power of sacred Afro-Brazilian drumming with the beautiful brass sonorities, harmonic sweep and jolt of a jazz orchestra. It’s a big band informed by Gil Evans and the gods of Candomblé, featuring five percussionists, 14 brass and reeds – with a tuba, four trombones and baritone sax, they get a deep, soulful sound – and a Candomblé “drum master” who plays the tall wood hand drums called atabaques. The ensemble, which won the Brazilian Music Award for Best New Artist and Best Instrumental Group in 2010, is led by Letieres Leite, a composer, woodwind player and arranger who has worked with top Brazilian musicians like Hermeto Pascoal, Gilberto Gil and Elba Ramalho, and American jazz players such as Stanley Jordan. With influences ranging from Evans and Pascoal to Weather Report and the street bands and ritual Afro-Brazilian drumming of Salvador, the Bahian capital, Leite and Orkestra Rumpilezz create a rich and mighty sound. Opening set by Batuke Samba Funk. Free admission.

Mardi Gras Casino displays poker dealer’s art

Before you focus on the cards or the slots at Mardi Gras Casino, take a look at the poker-themed paintings in the entryway.

They’re the creations of Robby Becker, one of the Hallandale Beach casino’s dealers.

The Hollywood artist, 42, combines spraypaint with acrylic and varnish, creating a montage-ish look. One painting shows cards, a Mardi Gras napkin and the words, “Big Easy,” overwritten in white. The Big Easy is the name of Mardi Gras’ poker room.

Another, titled “Good Flop,” is relevant to the serious poker player. It shows five players’ hands after the three-card “flop” in Texas Hold ’em: One player has two pair, another three of a kind, one a straight, another a flush and the fifth is one card away from a straight flush.

Airport Hilton parking garage being torn down

A parking garage at the Airport Hilton in Dania Beach is being torn down to make way for a new runway at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

Demolition got underway this week at the two-story parking structure. The 400-room, eight-story hotel will remain open until April. It should be completely torn down by June.

The 8,000-foot south runway is expected to open later this year. Officials decided the hotel and parking garage would pose potential harm to planes using the new runway.

Airport officials say the runway will help ease delays at the airport.

USA Today: Hollywood Broadwalk is Florida’s Best Beach Boardwalk

“Hollywood Beach’s joggers, strollers and bicyclists can take a victory lap today,” said Jorge Camejo, Executive Director of the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency. “This validates what the locals already know – Hollywood’s Broadwalk offers the best beach experience in the Sunshine State and is a unique American treasure whose renown is steadily growing around the world.”

This national recognition comes on the heels of another high-profile honor for the historic boardwalk built by city founder Joseph Young in the 1920s and renovated in 2008. In October, the 2.5-mile Broadwalk was designated by the American Planning Association (APA) as one of the Top 10 Public Spaces In America for 2013, putting it in the company of such iconic public spaces as New York’s Grand Central Terminal and L.A.’s Grand Park.

The Downtown Hollywood Mural Project Celebrates One Year Of Cool With Tatiana Suarez (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

by Vanessa Martin

Just north of Miami, contemporary outdoor murals have been popping up around downtown Hollywood over the last year, adorning the city with vibrant colors and imaginative characters. Organizers with the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project hope to spur an artistic renaissance similar to the one Wynwood experienced when developer Tony Goldman conceived of the Wynwood Walls outdoor mural project in 2009.

The murals are intended to “activate an interesting scene downtown and will connect the wine-and-dine crowd with cultural events, drawing pedestrians beyond their usual haunts,” Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency director Jorge Camejo told New Times.
